Every year, four Boston schools take to the ice to battle for the coveted Beanpot. On the third Saturday in February, Boston business schools shift their focus from pucks to bucks in The B-School Beanpot Case Analysis Competition. The event brings together teams of undergraduate business students from Babson, Bentley, Suffolk University, Boston University, Northeastern University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During the intense, 12-hour event, they battle the clock and each other to develop the best solution to a current business issue.
The B-School Beanpot was born under the idea of bringing the same level of competition generated from the hockey Beanpot to the academic arena. Similar to the excellence, spirit, and intense level of competition of the hockey Beanpot, the B-School Beanpot showcases students' talents in a highly-publicized event. The competition provides an opportunity for business students to benchmark their skills against peers and the expectations of the corporate community.
During the preliminary round, two teams from each school assume the role of consultants and develop their proposals to this year's case. A panel of 12 corporate executives review the written analyses and decide which four teams advance to the final round. The final four teams give a presentation to the judges in order to receive cash prizes, and the first place team takes home the B-School Beanpot trophy, handcrafted and donated to the competition by Wallace Silversmiths of East Boston.
The B-School Beanpot serves as a forum for future business leaders to showcase their talents and determines the ‘best of the best’ in Beantown . The competition is organized by The B-School Beanpot Organization (BSBO), a team comprised of 17 undergraduate students at Boston University’s School of Management. The event is completely funded by generous corporate sponsors. Last year's sponsors included Ernst & Young, New Balance, Peet's Coffee & Tea, Hewlett Packard, Princeton Review, Shaw’s, Pizzeria Uno Chicago Bar & Grill, and the Boston University School of Management.
Thanks to the help of generous sponsors and the participation of the six competing schools, the B-School Beanpot has become and will continue to be a Boston tradition.
